Pregnancy is a transformative time, not just for our bodies but also for our wardrobes. As someone passionate about color analysis and sustainability, I wanted to approach maternity fashion in a way that reduced environmental impact while ensuring comfort and staying true to my color palette.
A Low-Impact Approach to Maternity Wear
Since pregnancy is temporary, I focused on making thoughtful choices that aligned with sustainability:
Decluttering my wardrobe to find pieces (oversized or very elastic) that could adapt to my changing body.
Swapping clothes with friends and acquaintances who had already been through pregnancy.
Choosing versatile, long-lasting pieces from regular women’s collections rather than maternity-specific clothing.
The only new items I added to my wardrobe were three pairs of maternity tights. I’m quite picky about tights—if they don’t fit well, they can be incredibly uncomfortable! To ensure maximum comfort, I selected them carefully and chose colors within my palette so they would complement what I already owned. I opted for elastic fabrics that adapt well to body changes, ensuring that (hopefully!) I can continue wearing them even after pregnancy.
Choosing Versatile and Sustainable Pieces
Rather than buying maternity-specific clothes, I opted for stretchy wool-blend maxi dresses from standard women collections. These dresses have adapted to my changing shape from the early months to now (at 8 months pregnant) and will continue to be wearable postpartum.
For outerwear, I styled my outfits with oversized jackets I already owned, which worked perfectly with my evolving silhouette.
I also found vintage oversized sweaters, which I know I'll keep wearing well beyond pregnancy.
At home, as my belly grew, I borrowed cozy sweatpants from my partner—a simple and sustainable comfort solution!
Adjusting to My Palette with Smart Tricks
Not all the clothes I received through swaps were in my ideal color palette, but I used some color analysis tricks - which you can find at this link - to make them work beautifully.
Comfort and Conscious Choices
Every pregnancy is unique, and every body has different needs. There’s no “right” or “wrong” when it comes to choosing what to wear during this transformative time. However, we can be mindful of our choices, balancing comfort, personal style, and sustainability.
